For the name day of Mr. Andreas Siller
(Poet's title: Zur Namensfeier des Herrn Andreas Siller)
Set by Schubert:
D 83
for voice, violin and harp[November 4, 1813]
Des Phöbus Strahlen sind dem Aug entschwunden
Hinweg vom Horizont,
Und oh! des Feierabends frohe Stunden
Beleuchtet nun der Mond.
Phoebus’ rays have disappeared from view
Down below the horizon.
And oh. The happy hours of the festive evening
Are now lit up by the moon.

Andreas Siller (1782-1832) was a master cooper who was a close neighbour of Schubert’s father. They also appear to have been colleagues in the charity work of the local parish. His name day was 10th November (the festival day of Saint Andrea Avellino, who died in Naples on 10th November 1608 and who was canonised by Pope Clement XI in 1712).
