Schubert appears to have set only two texts featuring the devil, both by Goethe and both referring to him not by name (Satan, Mephistopheles, Beelzebub or whatever) but calling him simply ‘Evil Spirit’ (böse Geist) or ‘the evil one’ (der Böse).
