Wenn sanft entzückt mein Auge sieht,
Wie schön im Lenz die Erde blüht,
Wie jedes Wesen angeschmiegt
An ihren Segensbrüsten liegt;
Und wie sie jeden Säugling liebt,
Ihm gern die milde Nahrung gibt;
Und so in steter Jugendkraft
Hervor bringt, nährt und Wachstum schafft:
Dann fühl’ ich hohen Busendrang,
Zu rühmen den mit Tat und Sang,
Des wundervoller Allmachtsruf
Die weite Welt so schön erschuf.
Der Wald und Kraut drauf wachsen ließ,
Und Meere sie umgürten hieß;
Von dem der Seegen alle kömmt,
Der uns mit Wonne überschwemmt!
Ja, ja, mein Geist, erheb ihn laut,
Der unsern Erdenball gebaut!
Erfreu, so lang es ihm gefällt,
Dich an dem Anblick seiner Welt.

How beautifully the earth blossoms in spring,
How every being snuggles up
And lies on her bountiful breast,
And how she loves every one of the litter,
And happily gives them gentle nourishment,
And thus, with the unchanging power of youth
She brings them forth, nourishes them and makes them grow,
I then feel a great urge within my breast
To use deeds and actions to praise Him
Who issued the miraculous almighty summons
And created the wide world in all its beauty!
He who made forests and plants to grow on it
And commanded oceans to surround it,
He from whom all blessings flow,
He who inundates us with bliss!
Yes, yes, my spirit, extol him aloud,
He who built our globe!
For as long as it pleases him, enjoy
Looking at his world.

The poet has taken the image of ‘Mother Earth’ and evoked a vivid picture based on the idea of dogs or pigs suckling their large litters at their multiple nipples. Like a mother, the Earth (the word ‘Erde’, earth, is feminine in German) brings forth offspring, suckles them and then helps them grow, a process which is particularly noticeable in spring. The poet’s response to his awe in the face of this fertility and fecundity is to praise the (male) God who created the system in the first place.

Note: This poem is a variant of Matthisson’s Die schöne Erde. The modifications could not be traced to an authentic publication of Matthisson, however. While Mildheimisches Lieder-Buch uses the title “Die Erde” and does not mention Matthisson as the author, the prior edition of this variant in Allgemeines Liederbuch des deutschen Nationalgesanges uses the title “Die schöne Erde” and specifies Matthisson as the author.
Die schöne Erde
Wenn hochentzückt mein Auge sieht
Wie schön die Erde Gottes blüht,
Wie alles Wesen angeschmiegt
An ihren Segensbrüsten liegt;
Und sie, voll Mutterfreundlichkeit,
Sich jedes ihrer Kinder freut,
So inniglich sie alle liebt,
Allmilde Nahrung jedem giebt;
Wie groß und hehr, in Himmelspracht,
Ihr volles Blütenantlitz lacht,
Und wie, in steter Jugendkraft
Sie rastlos waltet, wirkt und schaft:
Dann fühl’ ich hohen Feuerdrang
Zu rühmen den mit Preisgesang,
Des wundervoller Allmachtsruf
